HOLMES: So "Love Hard" is a Netflix film. It's called "Love Hard." What's "Love Hard" about? Linda, now you have a recommendation that's sure maybe to put us in a bright holiday spirit. That's "The Humans," which is in theaters now, and it's also streaming on Showtime. You're not going to forget these performances. And I realize as I say this out loud, that doesn't sound like fun for the whole family over Thanksgiving. We hear the heavy footsteps of their neighbors and the creaking pipes and this ancient, wheezing elevator that really creates a real profound sense of dread and claustrophobia. There is an extra element to this film, and that's the sound design. You've got Jayne Houdyshell, who won the Tony for this role on Broadway, Steven Yeun, Beanie Feldstein, Amy Schumer. The writing here and particularly the performances are so grounded that it really feels like you're eavesdropping on this family. It may not shock you to learn that, over the course of the dinner, secrets get revealed. Now, on paper, that may sound like a pretty familiar setup for drama. There's a young woman and her boyfriend who invite her parents and sister, as well as her ailing grandmother, over for Thanksgiving in her rundown apartment in Manhattan that they haven't furnished yet because they just moved in. And as you mentioned, it takes place in real time over the course of a Thanksgiving dinner.

This is "The Humans." It's hard to describe.

A movie on your list about a family who's celebrating Thanksgiving in a Manhattan apartment - tell us about this film. Now, I don't know why I would be compelled to watch anything other than the winless Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, but it seems like there's a lot new content that I should be thankful for. And they're here with a list of recommendations. NPR critics Linda Holmes and Glen Weldon co-host NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast.

Now, whether that means cozying up with family and loved ones or sneaking away from that contentious conversation around the dinner table, there's plenty to watch on TV this Thanksgiving. Word of mouth - 1920 evil returns will scare you out of the theatre that is if you are brave enough to enter one. Many of us will gather in person for Thanksgiving and for the first time in actually a couple of years. We are still searching for a filmmaker who gives this genre the respect that it deserves. The Ramsay's got it right for that generation. T.V actor Sharad Kelkar makes his Hindi film debut with this film and makes you wonder why did he choose this film? Sample this, a doctor tells Aftab and Tia " xray se hum insaan ke aks ko dekh sakte hain".

Since the film is set in the 1920's somewhere close to Shimla but shot abroad you get to hear some minor gems as dialogues. Getting scared is least of your worries by then.

The pace picks up in the 2nd half but by that time you are so bored looking at Aftab and Tia that you just twiddle your thumbs and wait for your misery to end. The overuse and abuse of background music shatters your ear drums but then it was expected in a film like this. Till then cinematographer turned director Bhushan Patel bores us with a depressive Aftab Shivdasani (why did he return?) and the forever scared Tia Bajpai. Smriti (Tia Bajpai) is possessed by an evil spirit (who loves the smell of perfume) but we get to see the effect of her possession only after interval point.

The only common theme between both the films is that it is about a woman possessed. This one is produced by him and is a sequel in spirit (pun not intended) to 1920 (2008) which was directed by him and is the only horror film of his which I liked. Since the time Vikram Bhatt tasted success in this genre with Raaz (2002) he has kept on making horror films. which is a good thing only if they would get it right. Vikram Bhatt and Ram Gopal Varma are hell bent on keeping the horror genre alive in Hindi films. Review 1920 - Evil Returns & earn 20 DM Points.* Review Submit
